hey jamil! ive been thinking [ you know, ever since Demi-Fiend opened his mind to adoption and vore a couple of weeks ago, ] when we go home, or well not right away when we go home but just in the future i guess. what if i adopt kids instead of having them with someone? it just seems like a better option! that way it wouldnt matter if i didnt marry a girl right away you know if i didnt meet anyone i liked! and there are loads of kids who need parents too right? i dont know if everyone would be ok with it though. what do you think?
i know but youre way better at figuring out how people are gonna react to things! like all those times in first year i thought it would be fine if was a tiny bit late but you said i was going to get detention for sure and then i got detention?
It's not like it would be illegal to do it that way, but it's not tradition, so you'll probably make a lot of people unhappy if you want to go that route. It's hard to say how some people will react until you make the suggestion.
Why? What difference does it make to you?
[He has a feeling he'll regret asking that question...]
[ There's a bit of a pause before Kalim replies. He thinks of pointing out that he'll probably be expected to get married before then, and that even then it's not as simple as doing whatever he likes... But Jamil definitely hasn't given this subject nearly as much thought as he has – which obviously makes sense, but he's SO used to Jamil knowing best about everything... ]
haha right it doesnt matter for now anyway i guess i was just thinking!
[Jamil's thoughts on Kalim's circumstances kind of start and end at: what on earth does Kalim have to complain about? If all Jamil had to do to inherit the kind of riches Kalim is in line for was get married and sire a child, he'd do it in a heartbeat (or so he thinks, anyway). So naturally he hasn't given much thought to what it would actually be like to be in that position.
Something about the way Kalim laughs off the subject gives him pause, though. He usually only does that when the topic of conversation is making him upset, and he's the one who'd brought it up in the first place. Unsure why he even cares so much, Jamil scrolls back up and rereads the conversation, trying to figure out what it is Kalim's really asking.
After several minutes (where Jamil fights with himself whether to even ask) comes the response:]
[What Jamil will never admit is he wants a goatee like the Sorcerer of the Sands Classic SO bad but the interim growth period is so embarrassing looking he can never bring himself to commit to it.]
[ Well, Kalim doesn't want to lie, but he also doesn't want to talk about the future timeline stuff... It was kind of a bummer! He mulls over it for a bit before he responds. ]
just thinking about the future haha! id definietly like to have a beard or a moustache but would that make me look like an old man??? LOL
[The future's been on everyone's mind recently, for obvious reasons, but Jamil has not asked Kalim what it was like where he was and he hasn't shared his own experience either. He honestly doesn't remember much, anyway--not the fine details, just Lilia's befuddling presence and the mounting panic.
So he has no idea what Kalim saw on his end or what the future has to do with them growing beards. There's a connection there he could make that he really doesn't want to. Kalim's probably just talking about the future in the abstract sense. He'd have said something if he'd encountered anything more relevant, surely, he doesn't know how to keep his mouth shut. There is therefore no reason to think more deeply about this topic.
He is also not going to spend any time imagining what Kalim would look like with a beard. That would be ridiculous.]
You do realize a beard takes maintenance? You couldn't just let it grow, you'd have to take care of it.
[At some point during the day Cater will be stopping by the spooky forest abode to drop off gifts for all its inhabitants. Jamil is no exception! If he's not there to have it handed directly to him, he'll find a basket with his name on it that contains an assortment of different cooking spices and teas. Hidden inside is a note that reads:
The real gift is that if you ever need a break from babysitting I'm volunteering to take over whenever you need LOL. Just say the word! ;)
Kalim had kind of forgotten his promises to Maomao, but he saw some weird mushrooms while he was taking the laundry in this afternoon and suddenly remembered... It's been a while since he heard from her! He said he'd help her test some drugs – maybe he should drop her a line to ask about that? But that was before his Conversation with Jamil. Hmm. That's the kind of thing Jamil would want input on, and Kalim did promise to listen to him even if he can't pay him.
He should probably check in.
"Hey, Jamil!" His arms are still full of laundry (he forgot to take the basket out to put it in so he's just raw dogging it). "I just remembered something I need to tell you about!"
Jamil is cooking something I don't feel like picking when Kalim comes in with his arms full of clothes, and immediately decides this is more important than whatever cool bug Kalim probably saw outside.
"Kalim, I told you, if you forget to take the laundry basket with you need to come back and get it first. I don't care if it takes more time, it is NOT worth dropping something and having to clean it again!"
"Ah hah hah, whoops... Sorry, Jamil!" Kalim peers over the laundry to locate the basket and decant everything into it. "I didn't drop anything this time, though, so it's okay!"
Settling down to start folding it, he continues, "Okay, so! I met this girl in town a couple of times, her name is Maomao. She's kind of weird, I think she likes throwing up? Anyway, she asked me if I could help her try out some of the medicine she's making, and I said yes, buuut... That was before we had that talk, and I figured I should check with you!"
Jamil is trying to pretend he isn't monitoring Kalim's folding technique out of the corner of his eye, so it takes a second for what he's saying to sink in.
When it does he gives a comical double take. What happened to only trusting Jamil's food?
Kalim's folding technique is... fine. It's fine! It could be worse! It's fine.
Anyway, what happened to only trusting Jamil's food is that he had to live here without Jamil for two weeks and in that time he was forced to decide that didn't matter here because no one here would want to poison him anyway. The food situation is one of the things he hasn't reevaluated since their talk.
"Well, she seemed nice, and like she knows what she's doing! I'm pretty sure if something went wrong she'd know what to do."
Jamil is caught between wanting to blow his lid and wanting to take over folding. It is only years of careful practice that keeps all this off his face.
Well, he really should have expected something like this. He should have set things straight with Kalim immediately, but no, because he dithered around Kalim went and got himself mixed up in nonsense while he wasn't paying attention. It's a good thing they're not at home, because that feels like nothing short of negligence. What is wrong with him?
Jamil keeps himself in the moment: Kalim is presently alive, so there's still time to rectify this before it gets worse. And he certainly can't trust Kalim's impressions of the situation, so he'll just have to sort it out personally.
He forces himself to turn away from Kalim's 'folding', as if he's no longer bothered. "I don't think it would be a good idea. You'll just have to tell her you're no longer available," he says, perfectly placid. "Or better yet, I can do it myself, since I'll need to go into town for more ingredients anyway. You said her name was Maomao?"
And that she liked throwing up. Whatever that means.
Kalim makes no objections. He's a little disappointed that he won't get to help his new friend, but he brought it up in the first place because he guessed Jamil would have an issue with it. It feels kind of... comfortable, honestly... Maybe it's because it's been a while since this kind of thing was Jamil's business – if something like this this had happened while they were still at school and this was still the norm he might have pouted about it a bit – but right now the straightforwardness of it makes him feel a bit more secure.
He doesn't have any qualms with the prospect of Jamil going to talk to Maomao in his stead, either – if anything he seems keen on it. Maybe Jamil can make another friend!
"She's pretty short," he gestures an approximate height, "and she has dark hair and freckles."
"Where do you normally meet with her?" His voice stays very casual as he goes about the kitchen putting things back in order. Maybe he can just go settle this now, on the premise that he doesn't have enough to make lunch. Kalim can keep to himself here for a bit. "If she makes legitimate medicine, she must have a shop."
