Personality answers:
  1. Who in your character's canon influenced the most growth in your character? What do they think about this character?
As much as Jamil would hate to admit it, the answer is Kalim Al-Asim, his childhood, uh... relationship and technical boss. They grew up together, but due to the differences in their status Jamil spent his formative years having to hold back his natural talent in order to not outshine Kalim (who had no awareness of this expectation). Unsurprisingly, this caused Jamil to develop a deep resentment of Kalim over the years which culminated in an attempted-coup-and-then-later-murder while in high school. Jamil's arc since that incident has in large part dealt with his reassessing their relationship in the face of Kalim's forgiveness, and him learning to see Kalim as an ally and (friendly) rival instead of an enemy. Whether willingly or not, Jamil has been comparing himself to Kalim his whole life, to the point where he can't seem to conceive of life without him.
  2. What does your character think about physical appearances? Are they the sort to meticulously primp themselves, or could they not care less?
Jamil is constantly caught between wanting to stand out and reflexively repressing himself and this is reflected in his appearance. His classmates see him as boring and unremarkable, an impression he cultivates on purpose, and yet at the same time he has an elaborate, unique hairstyle that he does himself every morning (albeit with magic) and clearly takes great care in decorating and maintaining. He's a guy who desperately wants to express his individuality but sabotages his own efforts. Despite this, he hates being CALLED boring and any insinuation that he's actually mid will fire him up to overcompensate the other way. But also, noticing him when he doesn't want to be noticed freaks him out too! So in this way he's actually very neurotic about his precisely balanced boring image and whether that's being perceived by other people on his terms. What a guy
  3. What is your character most afraid of?
    Bugs ❤️

In Seriousness, Jamil's greatest fear (existential, abstract) is never directly outlined, but it can be extrapolated from his motivations. Jamil's resentment of Kalim stems from feeling that he had to make himself mediocre for Kalim's benefit. Even after The Incident that brought those feelings to light (more on that below), Jamil seems reluctant to fully apply himself and frequently invents reasons for it to better for him not to act. Any sort of criticism or failure to perform at his professed level of competence causes him to either try furiously to prove himself or spiral into self-doubt. From this it can be inferred that Jamil fears being mediocre In Truth and not just because he's forced to be by circumstance. It's a lot easier for him to build himself up in his own head if reality never has a chance to contradict him!! The thing is, Jamil DOES have a lot of natural talent, he just also has a very fragile ego about that because he's a sensitive little baby.
  4. What would be your character's lowest, darkest moment they've lived through? How did they respond to their troubles and face their demons?
Mmm probably that time he had a mental breakdown and went magically berserk and tried to kill his Childhood Not-Friend and almost died in the attempt. Interestingly the resolution to this ends up being delayed by several (in-game) months, as Kalim forgives Jamil immediately and they awkwardly return to status quo despite Jamil's true feelings now being out in the open; this is really all they can do, as the circumstances keeping them together are beyond both of their control (at the moment). Jamil's development since then has involved both adjusting the way he sees Kalim, who is adamant that they be Real Friends despite their differences in status and all of Jamil's baggage, and contending with what his own self-determination looks like now that he no longer has an excuse for holding himself back. Thankfully he and Kalim learn to communicate better (by getting into a baby fight) and then Jamil even has has a literal Facing His Demons (Overblot Phantom) moment where he declares his intent to choose his destiny under his own power and whatnot 👏 good for him

Inventory:
  • Magic pen - A conduit for spellcasting embedded with a gem that functions as a blot trap. (Blot is a toxic byproduct of using magic.) Jamil can still use magic just fine without one, but it's a lot easier and less dangerous to cast spells with a pen.
Powers/Abilities:
  • Magic - A minority of people in Twisted Wonderland are capable of using magic, and Jamil attends a specialized school to study it. The limitations of magic are vaguely defined in canon, but theoretically it is possible to create whatever can be imagined in sufficient detail; Jamil is particularly skilled at defensive magic and anything requiring finesse. Magic use generates blot, a toxic substance which in large quantities can turn into a giant parasitic creature that drains the victim of all their magic until they die don't worry about it. This happened to Jamil but he got better.
  • Mind control - Jamil's "signature spell" Snake Charmer, a brand of magic unique to him, allows him to do this. Via eye contact, Jamil can put someone into a trance-like state and puppet their body for a period of time. This lasts until Jamil dispels the effect or it wears off naturally (unclear amount of time). The victim can also be distracted out of it if Kalim is anything to go by
  • Battle butler - Does whatever a battle butler does? Jamil has had bodyguard training as part of his duties to Kalim, who has been the target of several assassinations and kidnappings. This seems to include some form of physical training, though Jamil still defaults to using magic in a fight. He also knows how to synthesize antidotes to most common poisons.
  • Good At Cooking - Though Jamil does make all of Kalim's food, this isn't actually part of his job requirements. He just happens to also be mompilled
  • Good At Dancing - I cannot imagine how this will be relevant but here it is anyway

Goals: A lot! I love to put my little guys through the body horror wringer. I'm also interested in the mental changes pushing Jamil to indulge some of his worse impulses, as he's one of those guys simmering with repressed rage and all that. Jamil hates feelings so forcing him to imprint on other characters will be fun. Aaaand of course what's some pair bonding to make his codependent relationship with Kalim even worse ❤️
